I'm not the type of gardener who feels compelled to hide my hoses. If people see my garden and think it was all done without the aid of water then well, I'd question their sanity. So I don't have any of those hose hiding pots or anything like that.
However I am lazy and no task to me is more annoying to having to put away a hose after I've used it, so I love a good hose reel. Now I'm sure you're all familiar with hose reels, they sell them at practically every store you can buy gardening stuff at in the Spring. They're plastic boxes that sit on the ground with attached handles.
The problem with these reels is that they're plastic, so they can easily break. They sit on the ground, so you have to bend low to use them, and they're not anchored by anything so they frequently tip over. Also the interior plumbing parts usually aren't the greatest so you get leaks.
Quite frankly I've found the typical hose reel to be more trouble than it's worth, until I discovered Rapid Reels.
Rapid Reels are industrial strength hose reels. They do not hide the hose in a cheap looking plastic box, but it stays out on display. The reels are solid durable metal with ball bearing rotation sockets. There are two varieties, a perpendicular mount and a horizontal mount, I have one of each. The company also sells carts but I haven't used those.
To attach the house to a wall or other structure there is a mounting plate that screws in, and then the hose reel itself just slips into position. The beauty of this setup is that you can easily remove & secure the hose reel in the winter or when you're on vacation and leave just the mounting plate permanently affixed to your house or wherever you mounted it.
The interior plumbing of these reels is solid brass and they come with a high quality lead hose (around 4 feet). They come with a 10 year warranty against leaks as well.
These hose reels are sold at many websites, but I've found Amazon.com to have the cheapest prices. Still, at around $80 these are not cheap. However they're durable, easy to use, will save you time and effort, and in the end give you more time to enjoy your garden. So when you think of it like that you can't afford not to have one.
